Freedom Programme for Woman Who Have Experienced Domestic Abuse and May Still Be Living With Their Abuser

What is the Freedom Programme

The Freedom Programme is a weekly support group for women that have experienced domestic abuse or may still be living with an abuser. It is a safe and confidential place for women to meet other women that have been or are in similar situations to each other. It is a very powerful group experience and can change the way you feel about the abuse you have experienced, giving you the insights to recover and regain your confidence.

What will we do in the group?

Each week we look at different types of domestic abuse tactics and behaviours that are common in intimate partner violence. We discuss coercive control and gas lighting and examine the effects it has on women. We will discuss how the different types of domestic abuse impacts women and their children’s lives.

How does the group run?

All women taking part will be asked to sign a confidentiality contract to ensure all women feel safe and comfortable. No one will be asked to share in the group, unless they feel comfortable sharing. The trained facilitators will take you through the programme in a safe way, no one will ask you intrusive questions, or make comments or judgements about your situation.

Can I still come to the group if I am living in the abusive relationship?

Absolutely, the group is for women in and out the relationship we also know a lot of abuse continues after separation. Women attending the group will be at different stages in their life, you will meet women from a variety of ages, ethnicities and walks of life, this is what makes the Freedom programme a successful programme that domestic abuse services run in parts of Ireland.

How does it help women?

The group experience is very powerful, you get to hear other women talk about their experiences, what women share can help and encourage you. Many women feel connected to others in the group as often they have not been able to share what has happened to them. The Freedom Programme helps women to understand the tactics and behaviours used in intimate partner violence. Many women say that taking part has helped them with healing and recovery from domestic abuse.
